India’s Premier Examination for Public Service
The Civil Services Examination (CSE), conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), is one of the most prestigious and competitive examinations in India. It serves as the gateway to a wide range of esteemed services and administrative positions in the Government of India.
Through a single examination, candidates can compete for approximately 23 different services, including some of the nation’s most sought-after careers such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), and several other Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’ services.
The examination is designed to identify individuals with strong intellectual abilities, sound judgment, leadership qualities, administrative aptitude, and a commitment to public service.

Examination Structure
The Civil Services Examination consists of three stages:
Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Prelims)
The Preliminary Examination acts as a screening test for admission to the Main Examination.
Paper I: General Studies

Paper II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)
Marks: 200

Total Marks: 400
The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination are not counted for the final merit ranking. It is only a qualifying stage for selection to the Main Examination.
Stage 2: Main Examination (Mains)
The Main Examination evaluates a candidate’s depth of knowledge, analytical ability, writing skills, and overall understanding of issues relevant to governance and society.
The examination consists of nine descriptive papers.

The marks obtained in these papers are not included in the final merit calculation.

Candidates are required to write essays on topics of national, social, political, economic, and philosophical significance.

There are no minimum qualifying marks in the Interview.
